Spring is when you feel like whistling, even with a shoe full of slush. — Doug Larson

A Note from Tim
Spring is in the air and you know what that means... it's time to start planning for the future. One thing many of us don't consider in planning for the upcoming year is the state of our mental health and it's incredibly important that we do!
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and, after the drudges of a looonnnnng winter, many of us are feeling the effects. We've dedicated this newsletter to to providing you resources and tips for a healthy & happy spring!
Mental Health Stigmas
When assessing our own mental health, or noticing changes in those around us, we're often basing our judgement off of our views of what mental health means to us. According to the Mayo Clinic, mental health stigmas can also lead to discrimination and can often stop someone from getting the help they so desperately need. It's important to understand that judgements are often based on a lack of understanding rather than factual information. Read more about how we can overcome mental health stigmas by visiting the link below.

Veterans

Mental Health & Veterans
When talking about mental health, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention our veterans. On average, 16.8 veterans lose their mental health battle every day... and the number keeps climbing. Our men and women that have served often cope with feelings of weakness or failure and to cope can turn to substance abuse. This is often cyclical as the substance abuse that once helped cover up the mental health issues begins to contribute to their amplification.
We've put together some of the most trusted resources out there. Please share these with any active duty military members or veterans you know:
Wounded Warrior Project
Not only do 1 in 3 veterans live with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but 1 in 3 veterans also feel they don’t get the mental health services they need. We’re here to change that. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Check out the free mental health services and programs we offer below. As always, all programs and services provided through WWP are at no-cost to veterans and their families. CLICK HERE
Vehicles for Veterans
Outside of VA clinics, many veterans aren't aware of the many free help centers, crisis hotlines and clinics available. Below is a collection of nationally available mental health resources that veterans can take advantage of at no cost. Hundreds of local resources are available for veterans as well. CLICK HERE
NAMI for Veterans
NAMI Minnesota (National Alliance on Mental Illness) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with mental illnesses and their families. For over 40 years, NAMI Minnesota has worked to promote the development of community mental health programs and services, change public attitudes about mental illnesses, improve access to services & increase opportunities for recovery. Mental Health & Seniors
We are continuing to see our aging population report feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression and dementia. For many seniors, they experience feelings of loneliness and anxiety. This can be a tough battle but experts recommend a few sure-fire ways to keep seniors connected to their communities while maintaining great mental health:
Volunteer & Meet Community Members
Invite Friends & Family for Lunch
Care for a pet: adopt, foster or volunteer!
In some cases, seniors may not be aware of the resources available to them. Senior Lifestyle has put together a list of over 40 resources for our seniors to take advantage of. CLICK HERE
